Maths and Literacy

During a follow-up of The Gingerbread Man lesson, the children made use of small gingerbread men pictures to measure various objects in class, as well as each other, and report about their findings. The pre-writing handout came in handy to structure their results before publishing them in writing.

The Whole Process

Year 4 students at St Aloysius Primary went through three important stages of the writing process - pre-writing, drafting and editing - when asked to design their dream bedroom.  Pictures of bedroom furniture were pasted on to a handout to create the students' dream bedrooms. This activity acted as a stepping stone for the actual writing task, which required students to write about their pictures.  Editing followed.  The children read their extracts to each other, and had to draw what their partners were describing.  Unclear instructions meant that more detail was necessary.

The Gingerbread Man and the Gingerbread Baby

This writing task followed two story telling sessions about The Gingerbread Man and The Gingerbread Baby.  During the prewritng activity, the students had to compare and contrast the two stories.

The Gingerbread Man and the Gingerbread Baby

1.  An old lady baked a gingerbread man, who ran away as soon as she opened the oven door.
2.  A horse came across the gingerbread man.  He chased it in order to eat it.
3.  A cow ran after the gingerbread man to eat it but didn't.
4.  Matty and his mother baked a gingerbread baby.  When they opened the oven door, the gingerbread baby jumped out of the oven but they couldn't catch him.
5.  The dog saw the gingerbread baby climb up the door and he was going to catch him, but he did not catch him.
6.  The gingerbread baby was chased by big and small goats.
7.  The fox ate the gingerbread man but he did not eat the gingerbread baby.
8.  The pig didn't eat the gingerbread man and the gingerbread baby.
